A Celebration of Education: The Friends School Spring Soiree 2017

On April 21st, Friends School of Wilmington celebrates its annual Spring Soiree and the night is already shaping up to be one of the best in school history. This year it will be held at The Terraces at Sir Tyler to accommodate a growing crowd and the event’s first live band, Striking Copper.

“This event continues to grow year after year,” says Shawn Tunis, event organizer and PTO co-chair.

As the largest parent-led fundraising event held by the school, this is a chance for all members of Friends School to get together and have a good time while supporting a good cause.

Friends School of Wilmington is the only pre-kindergarten through 8th grade independent, progressive school in Wilmington, and their approach to education is what sets them apart. As part of 80 Friends Schools founded across the country over 300 years ago, the Wilmington school embraces an inquiry-based learning environment. This means that lessons are brought to life through experimentation and exploration, and teachers use open-ended questions to encourage students to use analysis and debate when crafting responses.

In addition to these methods, Friends School focuses on the whole child during the learning process: mind, body, and spirit.

“Brain research has shown time and again that movement and mindfulness significantly and positively impact learning” Shawn says, explaining that not only does this give students an advantage in their current environment, it sets them up for a lifetime of learning.

As an independent school, it takes money to fund the incredible opportunities Friends School offers its students, which is precisely why the Spring Soiree (in addition to other fundraisers) is held each year. Auction items like weeklong beach house stays and VW beach cruiser bicycles encourage attendees to give back to the school that gives to the children of our community. And taking care of teachers is always a priority for Friends School.

According to Shawn, “100% of the proceeds go toward increasing teacher compensation, providing professional development, and enhancing the quality of the student experience at Friends School.”

Another great aspect of the Spring Soiree? It’s just plain fun!

“We always look forward to seeing our extended community, old friends and new. This is an event that many people look forward to and the energy in the room is amazingly positive. We’re going to have beautiful auction items, delicious food, a live band and an extremely supportive and involved community coming together. We couldn’t ask for more!”
