Garden Party Style Guide
One of the best parties of the year in Wilmington, North Carolina is the oh-so-fabulous Garden Party. Day drinking on the Friday before the Azalea Festival is the culmination of southern chic dresses, hats, and bow ties galore. Now most of you might know that I am from the deep south…I’m from Mississippi and am a third generation Ole Miss grad. We wear “The Grove” dress code every weekend during the start of football season (we were the founders of dressing up for football games in the south, mind you), because it’s so much more comfortable on those muggy southern days to wear a sun dress. I have a couple of great outfit inspirations for those of you on a tight or loose budget to feel fabulous and on trend for the fête to start the warm months, y’all!
Now first and foremost you have got to wear a hat to this shindig. All southerners know that in the south it gets hot as hell. Back in the good ole days, women did not want their face to get flushed or burnt. They wanted to look and feel like porcelain, as not to show any perspiration, or … good heavens!… their hair might start to frizz. This hat is of the utmost importance and is the statement maker for your entire ensemble. Go big or go home, gals!
When you take your hat off you need to have a ‘do that is both manageable in the heat and can also stand up to the larger than life hat or flower head piece. Heidi braids with flowers braided into the hair would be so chic! Make your own hat by DIY-ing a feathered or floral headpiece. Top knots with gilded accessories are a great way to add a bit of sparkle to your look.
Pinks and pastels are here to stay. Anything in this shade will make any skin tone turn rosy and luminous. Ethereal looks can be brought to life in a garden setting; all you need are the right makeup tones to lighten your glow. I rounded up some of my favorite casual and upscale images with a shopping list under each inspired look.
When in a garden having a party, wear something that will make you blend in and also stand out all in the same setting. Florals are a great way to add a bit of punch to your textiles and bring some color into the party setting. As with the hats, go big or go home in your floral frocks.
All white everything. It is a classic statement outfit that will never go out of style. It’s ethereal, it’s timeless, and it’s breathable…it’s the perfect summer social ensemble.
